A Must Read For All Ages

I'm not gonna lie, but I always thought the books my sister chose for pleasure reading looked kinda artsy, dark, and well...just plain weird. The black book covers and obscure titles seemed more than a little of my radar of good literature. The fact that my sister and her art school friend would arrive at the local Barnes and Nobles at midnight of the publication release date to buy their already "reserved" copies of the latest in the "Twilight" series was enough to have me steer clear of the underground cult following of the book.

I will confess, it wasn't until my friend Lindsey read the first book and gave rave reviews that I even considered reading it. Then, she proceeded to read the remaining books in her own inhuman way, knocking out 500+ page book after book, each in less than 24 hours. That alone made me decide to swallow my pride and give the "Twilight" series a chance. At the very least I would hate the first book, not read the rest, and lose no money since I was borrowing the books.

Needless to say...I read the first book in a week, which is quite remarkable given my less than stellar reading speed. Never again will I judge a book by its cover *pun intended*. The plot is great, and for a young adult novel it broached the subject of love much more comprehensively than any of the "chick lit" meant for grown women. Plus... who doesn't love a page torn right out of "interview with a vampire".

I totally recommend reading it. Pick up a copy asap before the movie comes out this December and spoils the suspense of the book for you.

I'm going to Jackson...

Time to visit good ole Jackson, MS and all my friends who call it home. It's been a couple of months since I've seen most of my college friends so it should be a nice visit. Hopefully they haven't all completely forgotten who I am...gulp***

Heat Wave!

I'm about to faint...the A/C is out at Medtronic. Holy S***! And yet...we are still at work, nose to the grindstone. It has definitely been hot flash city for all the ladies in my building. I had to have a fan blowing up my dress to even make the day bearable. :) Tomorrow it's shorts for me.

OMFG!

In the immortal words of Blair Waldorf on my favorite new guilty pleasure Gossip Girl...OMFG! Capella auditions were so much fun for us as a staff, getting the opportunity to choose from such a talented group of individuals. There was some pretty fierce stuff going on out there to say the least. Anyways this weekend should be equally as exciting as a new crop of auditionees turns out and our call backs return for a second look. Til then...XOXO Gossip Girl. ;)

Capella Audions

3 days!!!

Calm after the Storm

Something is so beautiful about the morning after a big storm. Needless to say Hurricane Gustav left Memphis a rainy mess last night but the sky this morning on my drive to work was worth it.

Overtime!!!

Ever get the feeling you live at work? Yes, that's a rhetorical quesiton, but I'm truly beginning to believe I live at work. Most days I work through lunch and recently I have been working on a project for IT that's had me at Medtronic 2 extra hours a day on top of my normal 8. :0 Thank the Lord the overtime pay is worth it. I guess sometimes you must "live" your job in order to afford a life. Back to the grindstone!

WGI!!!

This is WGI and these are World Championships. I can hardly wait to go to Dayton now that the prelims schedule has been released. Get it afternoon performance time! This weekend is our Circuit Championships. It is very surreal that Capella has only been to the very first show and now the very last show. Boo on the weather. I haven't even seen all the IA groups we are competiting against. I look forward to calling Memorial Gymnasium the new home for SCGC. This will definately be a more cozy venue for the us than UTC Arena. Now I must pick out my outfits for SCGC, prelims, semis, and finals (fingers crossed) so I can look cute for all my WGI boyfriends, lol.

NO TIME, THERE'S NEVER ANY TIME :)

This is my list. Some are things I currently have no time for and others are in a more "figurative" sense.

1. Getting on Facebook
2. Doing my nails
3. Ungrateful people
4. Pettyness
5. Shopping :(
6. Calling my friends in Starkville
7. Worrying about things I can't control
8. Stupid girls
9. Going to concerts and listening to new music
10. Working out :(

There are oh so many more but once again, I HAVE NO TIME!

State Falls

So apparently I am a "traitor" for rooting on Memphis last night in there matchup with MS State. For those of you who don't know I am indeed a Bulldog alumna. I will give a shout out to Varnado, who broke the single season record for blocks last night that was held by Shaquille O'Neal. That's pretty amazing. State played a stellar game but they are no match for the Tigers. The intensity that team brings to the court is undeniable. So good job Bulldogs, better luck next season.

MCAT Lesson of the Day

In the spirit of all things Physics related ;), here is my MCAT lesson of the day.

Alpha decay- the emmision of a Helium nucleus consisting of 2 protons and 2 neutrons by an element. The new daughter element will have an atomic number 2 less than than the parent and a mass number of 4 less than the parent element.

5 Days

OMG! only 5 days til the Atlanta Regional. I am in dire need of some pagentry. Bring on the lame and false eyelashes. The "Heathmobile" is a crowded one for sure on the way down there, but we should have a blast in our hotel in Jasper on Friday. Saturday will be a very full day with 11 guards in our class. I cannot wait to debut the changes we have made to our show since the last regional. I hope the crowd and judges love it. Then we have Papa Do's and the Varsity to look forward to. Plus a 12 layer cake Bre is raving about. All you bloggers out there, keep Capella in your thoughts and prayers. Lots of our competitiors have dropped in scoring over the past few weeks. We hope the same fate doesn't wait for us. Happy Monday!

Winter Wonderland?

I feel myself becoming slowly snowed in at Medtronic. Someone help me escape! Too bad I don't have a kid and automatically get to leave when schools are cancelled, BOO! I think a fiesta night is needed to warm things up ;).

Jack Frost Stay Away!

Please no snow tomorrow. I'm channeling the Bahamas right now (85 and sunny). I would love to see what the SCGC is up to in Clarksville so hopefully the forecast is no snow and clear roads. It's been nearly two months since out first circuit show which I can hardly believe. So much has changed for all of the guards in our circuit since then. Shout out and best of luck to Bartlett HS WG who will be going to the Beech HS contest this weekend. See everyone at practice tomorrow night. In the meantime I'll be doing my rain dance ( no snow! BOO!)

Ballet

Today... I am going to Oxford to see my friends Emily and Jose and to watch some men in tights!! Yes!! In actuality we are going to watch the St. Petersburg Ballet at the Ford Center on the Ole Miss campus perform their rendition of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. I can not wait, even though I do have to go to Oxford (BOO, Go Dawgs!).

I truly think I missed my calling as a dancer. I probably couldn't have been a professional ballet dancer because of my height, but maybe Broadway or something. So hopefully the night turns out ok. We are planning to eat at Ajax in Oxford which is supposively really amazing southern food. Then we're going out on the square afterwards. Whoot! Hopefully the weather hold up tomorrow morning so I can drive back to work. Yay Medtronic... :(.

I want Spring!!

So for all of you Memphians out there, was yesterday not a complete tease (in terms of weather) ;). I loved the 74 and sunny we had. I even broke out my bermuda shorts for the occasion. Too bad it will be in the 30's tomorrow. I'm definitely okay with winter weather, as long as it's consistent. Unfortunately Memphis has a tendency to be 70 one day and 20 the next all throughout the winter months. My poor daffodils that have started blooming will be wilted come Wednesday. Spring is close though. We even get our extra hour of daylight back on Sunday. WHOOT! What will I do once I move to Indy and have winter til almost May? Oh Well!

Geriatric Drivers

So... if you have never seen any of Abe's graphic design projects you should definitely ask her to let you browse her portfolio. The reason I brought this up, today in particular, is for my close encounter with a "geriatric driver" this morning. My favorite piece by Sara was a postage stamp she created last year that could be designed to support any cause . Her stamps supported the end of "geriatric driving" and pictured these HILARIOUS little old ladies and men hunched over behind the wheel of their oversized cars. You have to see them to get the full effect of the joke.

Anyways this morning, not even 5 minutes from my home, I nearly nailed an old couple in their oldsmobile after they slamed on their brakes to turn into a barber shop parking lot in old Bartlett. To make things worse, granny had a cigarette lit up in her hand while she was driving.

Now, I love my grandmothers, don't get me wrong; but at some point you just shouldn't be driving anymore. It doesn't help things either that it seems all good grandparents over 65 tend to drive luxury edition tanks that they can't even park.

Here's to hoping I am never a geriatric driver myself (although, I already drive an oldsmobile, I guess I'm practicallly there) ;)

Go Tigers Go!

So I guess my last blog is in invisible ink or something. I promise if you try to highlight the area next to the picture you will see the text. I'm guess I'm not as computer savvy as I thought.

On another (more exciting) subject, UT lost to Vandy last night. This is the 4th #1 team in history that Vandy has beaten on their home court. Last year they beat Florida and prior to that the 93' Kentucky team. Go Commodores!!! Tennessee is only the 4th team in the history of Men's College BB to be beaten in their first game after receiving a #1 ranking. Good Ole Rocky Top just couldn't handle the pressure I guess. Go TIGERS!!!!!!

Dancing with the Stars

So I hope everyone is as excited about dancing with the stars as I am. One week and counting. Talk about a stellar cast this season. I think my favorite and least expected cast member is Penn from Penn and Teller. Steve Guttenberg should also be interesting, please no open shirts for him. LOL.

MONDAYS....aaaarrrrggghhh! That transition from your weekend mindset back to school or work, sucks. No other way to describe it.

However there have been some redeeming qualities to my Monday:

1. Dan Lau from CA is an Incubus fan, I got to listen to Dig while I scheduled his surgery :)

2. Rebel for lunch with Amy- yummy calzone.

3. No "mean" reps from St. Louis yet (karma cap on that!)

4. 50+ degrees outside, spring beakons :)

5. First day I could wear my skinny dress pants, get it Lean Cuisine.

Starting Fresh

My original post didn't show up so here is the revised version!

This week has been an amazing one for my guard, Capella.  After 3 1/2 months of hard work on the staff and members part we entered into the WGI Nashville regional with high hopes for a strong placement to solidify our prelims performance spot at Worlds.

The weekend started a little rough with Friday’s rehearsal at Bartlett High School.  The anticipation of the importance of the next day affected some of the members concentration and confidence during rehearsal.  I definitely remember what it felt like as a performer to worry about how the audience and the judges would perceive your show.  It’s hard to be “scored” on something that means so much to you and that you have spent so much time perfecting.  What if’s start going through your head and the true reason you do color guard sometimes becomes muddied in your mind.

Now as an instructor I understand more than ever the value of the experience of performing over the trophies or medals you can get.  I mean, honestly, my medals from all of my performing years just hang absently in my room and they mean more for the experiences they represent than the placements that went along with them.

Needless to say, our placement at Nashville was something Capella truly earned.  The members really stood strong together to give a strong finals performance after struggling in prelims.  They learned the true meaning of competition after the battle of the boom boxes and more importantly learned how to deliver when under pressure.  I think we all learned to trust ourselves more that weekend and that we truly are on the right track as a unit.
